
Hanlie Young took over as conductor of the Eastern Cape junior Children's Choir in April 2009, shortly after the choir was founded.
She obtained the B.Mus.Ed. degree and Church Organist Diploma from the University of Stellenbosch (US), as well as an honours degree in Music Education from the University of South Africa (UNISA). She obtainsed the Licenciate in Vocal Accompaniment through UNISA and passed several duet and trio examinations through Trinity College of London (currently Trinity Guildhall) with distinction.
As a student Hanlie acted as accompanist assistant and assistant in aural training at the Uinversity of Stellenbosch. Here she accompanied several artists such as Alma Oosthuizen, André Schwartz and Lisbé Visser and performsed regularly with co-student, Nataniël. As member of the Uinversity of Stellenbosch Choir, she was selected as repetitor, a responsibility which she later also accepted at the Eastern Cape Youth Choir. She directed choirs from the university residences for the annual choir festival for three years.
Hanlie acted as accompanist for the Eastern Cape Youth Choir, the Eastern Cape Children’s Choir (including performances in Germany, France and Switzerland during their 2010 tour) and the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) School of Music. In 2006 and 2008 she handled the accompaniment for two operas staged by the NMMU School of Music. In 2007, 2008 and 2009 she accompanied choirs during television recordings of local choirs for the SABC2.
She regularly acts as adjudicator at choir and singing competitions.
Hanlie is currently the organist at the Dutch Reformed Church Port Elizabeth-Hoogland as well as the head of the music department at Summerwood Primary School. She is married and has two sons and one daughter.
