ECCC Newsletter #201704

12 October 2017

Dear Parents and Choristers,

Please remember to also let your child read this newsletter.

So we have come to the last term and the last part of the choir’s calendar year.  The third term went by extremely quickly and ended with a wonderful concert that each and every one enjoyed.

First of all I want to thank everyone who has been assisting me during this year.  It is really a pleasure to work alongside you all and a special thanks to Mr. Lionel van Zyl and Ms. Amanda Engelbrecht for all their hard work and dedication.  You are a blessing to our choir and we appreciate you.  Others that I want to thank especially are Prof. Albert Troskie, Karika le Roux, Charlandi Hattingh and Liske Potgieter who joined us at our performances.  Thank you so much for offering up your time, we appreciate it immensely.

A special thanks to Mr. Pierre Stoffberg from Cillié High School who assisted the choir every Wednesday and Friday and with all the other activities we had at the school.  We congratulate him on his new post and will miss him dearly.

Thank you to each and every one of you for the commitment to your child and to the choir every week and especially for all the feedback I get from you.  My aim is always to assist you wherever I can.

Last term was filled with the excitement of making new friends and hosting children from another country.  Learning about them and showing them our culture was a highlight to many.  The exquisite music was just the cherry on the top and everyone involved was and is still talking about the wonderful and very successful concert and visit.

Even though I landed up in hospital, the event was still in fantastic hands and without the following people I believe this could not have been pulled off the way it was.  I want to thank Henriette Visser, Lyzet du Preez and Thomas Kiefer for organizing the event and a huge thank you to everyone who was involved in hosting, running around behind the scenes and just being there in the smallest way.    You guys are wonderful and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

We were honoured to be invited to perform at the wedding of Engelien (one of our alumni) and Chris Watson.  What a beautiful day and a wonderful feeling being part of the making of their special memories.

The Organ and Opera concert took place in a packed Summerstrand DR Church and a very responsive audience showed the choristers how well appreciated music is in Port Elizabeth.  I would like to thank Prof. Troskie and the Organ and Opera Society for inviting us to be part of their rich program.  We enjoyed the evening so much and hope we can be part of it again in the future.

The Prestige Concert was a wonderful evening, once again.  Thank you to Petrus Meyer and the ECYC who did and amazing job in organizing a successful concert.

Our fundraising event, Herifeast, was an absolute hit and everyone enjoyed not only the small concert but all the wonderfully prepared food.  It was such a privilege to work with the following ladies: Vuyokazi, Brenda, Lino, Sweetness, Mariam, Tannie Sarah, Mrs. Maqaga, Masunette, Vuyelwa, Abigail and Lulama.  If I have left out anyone, I apologise.  Thank you to all who helped in any way, you are amazing.

We attach hereto the updated choir calendar.  Please note and diarize all the events.  Should there be any changes/updates, we will keep you abreast of these via SMS. Please consult our website under the “EVENTS” tab to keep up to date.  The choir also has a Facebook page under the name Eastern Cape Children’s Choir, please feel free to join.  Previous newsletters can also be accessed via the website

Our choir is having auditions on the 21st of October 2017 at the NMU South Campus Music Department.  Please tell your friends and family about it and invite your fellow choristers at school to come and audition for our choir.

The photo shoot will be on the 28th of October 2017, the time will be confirmed.  We haven’t had a photo shoot for a while and we need new photos for our tour next year.  We therefor need all the choristers to please keep this date open.

This is the last term and we have one big concert that we are currently rehearsing for, The Selfish Giant.

It will be performed with the Nelson Mandela University Symphony Orchestra on the 29th of October 2017 at 15:00, at the Feather Market Centre.  All the rehearsals will have to be attended by everyone and there will be a couple of rehearsals with the orchestra.  These dates are on the calendar.   Please make sure that all the rehearsals are attended by all the choristers.

We will have our last rehearsal on the 3rd of November 2017 and our last meeting for the year from 17:00 – 18:00 on the same date.  Should you wish to suggest any new committee members for next year, please contact me. This meeting is very important and should be attended by all the parents, please.

The farewell function for all the choristers will be held on the 4th of November 2017 and we will announce the venue nearer to the date.  ALL THE CHORISTERS SHOULD ATTEND, PLEASE.

The welcome concert for all new members will take place on the 5th of November 2017 at 15:00 at St. Cuthbert’s Church.  Choristers to report to the church at 14:00, please.  We will also say goodbye to some of our choristers who we will miss dearly.  This event is compulsory, please.

This is going to be a wonderful last term and we hope that everyone will enjoy it thoroughly and not miss any performance.  We want to thank everyone once again for supporting your child at the activities and for being on time in dropping off at and fetching them from rehearsals.  Have a lovely last term.

Yours in music,
